My name is Wanda and I am the curator to my life.
My name is Pronounce Vanda, and it means Wanderer. The origin of my name is German and Polish and was first introduced in 1883 in the Novel “Wanda” by Ouida. I don’t always meet a lot people with my name beside Wendy, which happens to be my fraternal twin sister’s name. It’s strange being a twin, especially when we don’t really look alike and have completely different lives. People often assume that twins have some kind of special mental telepathy power and have identified us as the same person. The reality is that being a twin is just as normal as having an older or younger relative.
I used to hate it when people ask me if I was really related to my sister, because we are not identical or if I can feel my sister’s pain. Ridicules!!! Sometimes, I would lie to people and tell them that my sister was really my cousin just so I can stop being treated like some kind of freak. Sometimes, people would believe me and leave me alone. But other times, my sister would always proudly announce to the whole world that we are twins. It’s not like I was ashamed of being a twin, but I had to struggle with finding my own identity and not to be compared with my sister.
I couldn’t separate myself from my sister and identify myself especially when we used to share the same friends, classes, and space. My sister was in fact my first best friend. She was the first person I could share my first words with, and the only person I could depend on. As we got older, and went to different colleges, we were able to live our separate lives, and find our own identity’s. When I started to make my own friends, and learn what my own common interests were, I notice that I was extremely fascinated with photography and video. I think both mediums are a great contribution to media because its plays a major role in this social network world.
It’s amazing to see photography transition into this phenomenal digital explosion because nowadays, you see many people posting their pictures everywhere and promoting a public photo album of their personal lives. It’s like the internet became a time capsule with everyone’s personal thoughts and memories. My favorite form of photography is black and white film. The process of developing my own film in a dark room, gives me total freedom of making my own pictures from scrape instead of uploading it on a computer or editing the original image.
“Who am I?” Is a tough question I always ask myself growing up, but I can’t really answer that question yet. Every day I continue to find and learn new things about myself.
