My name is Mary. I'll start with the easy demographic data which informs my critique and consumption of media. I'm a second generation Korean American woman. I'm a thirty-something lesbian with a full-time job and a partner. My current obsessions are sugar cereal, Jesusa Rodriguez, crosswords, and the double dream hands - soulja boy mashup. My politics is generally left-leaning, hence the news I consume: the New York Times, the Gothamist, Jezebel, the Huffington Post, etc.
Much of the media I consume is largely for the purpose of escapism; I have a long-standing interest in science fiction (books, television, film). I've read all of William Gibson's novels and am now making my way through Octavia Butler's work. There's a way in which much of science fiction contains worlds where the status quo does not hold and that's appealing to me.
While another current hobby is learning the programming language C++, there are ways in which I don't participate in new media and technology. I am generally a Facebook and Twitter abstainer. It's partly a conscious decision and part shyness. I think the conscious part is related to the issues of privacy that arise from participation in social media and the time it takes.
