Women News Network

While searching a news media BY the women FOR the women, I came across Women News Network. According to their about page, Women News Network is dedicated to bringing you in-depth international women's news not found in our current public media stream. Starting from a writing assignment to cover global women's news for the UN Commission on the Status of Women in 2006, director Lys Anzia saw the vital need to report the many times hard and suffering stories of women. WNN news stories have appeared on UN affiliate and agency publications through WUNRN - Women's UN Report Network and UN-INSTRAW, the United Nations Institute of Training and Research for the Advancement of Women.
During last class, we read statistics showing how white male gets most of the jobs in the media world, as oppose to the female. I looked upon the staffs working for Women News Network and found 26 staffs in total. Out of the 26 staffs, 3 are male and the rest are female. And from a diversity standpoint, they are not just all white. They are a fully diverse group. I find this very interesting because this is totally the opposite of what we've read for class. What I see is not a male dominated network but a female dominated network. This might be because it is a women news network but I am glad to have found this. Reading the statistics last class was very upsetting because that is the truth. And now we have a silver lining.
Women News Network is successful because it reaches out to every women in different countries. They talk about issues around the world regarding women standing up for what is right. They report their stories from countries like Bosnia Herzegovina, Europe, United States, Nepal, Jamaica, Yemen, Papua New Guinea, Switzerland and Korea. Their stories are very powerful and compelling. It hits you right in the heart knowing what women have to do every day to fight for their rights.
