Nancy Meyers: A True Female Auteur

For this week’s assignment I decided to choose Nancy Meyers as my female director. Nancy Meyers has created some of the greatest romantic comedies in the past 20 years including my personal favorite, Something’s Gotta Give (2003). Meyer’s films usually demonstrate the lead character to be either a female or a male. She never discriminates and creates films based on personal relationships that people may have. It is relatable as well as interesting to see how she creates her films. It could be a possibility that she narrates her own life through her movies, which is why she has become so successful. Her partner at the time, Charles Shyer, was her co-pilot in this journey of success. He helped her out with ideas as well as numerous concepts. This could be a reason why her films are relatable to both men and women.
Nancy Meyers usually tends to play the role of all director, writer, and producer in her films. She constantly oversees everything go down as she truly exemplifies the true definition of an auteur. Meyers’ films tend to have a narrator, which creates a certain connection with the audience as the audience is getting to know that specific character personally. Nancy’s film It’s Complicated (2009) details an older woman go through a divorce and watch her husband get remarried to a significantly younger woman. The older woman, Meryl Streep’s character, notices how difficult it is to not be the “other woman” when her ex-husband returns and wants more of her. In an interview, Meyers reported that she herself endured this kind of similarity in her personal life in which was the spark of her ideas for the movie. The auteur theory is pretty clear within Nancy Meyers and her films. She is constantly hands on and references every film through her personal life. Brief Nancy
Whenever Meyer’s releases a film, it generates a crazy amount of revenue. Everyone floods to the theaters to see her new flick. Whether it’s the Parent Trap, What Women Want,, Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday, or It’s Complicated. Her all-star casts and amazing direction as well as personal experience that influence her direction bring people of all ages to relate as well as witness create cinema. That alone should be noticed, that not only are these films usually about women, and the men that destroy their lives emotionally, but the audiences tend to be women with their men who enjoy the filmsas well. All in all audiences notice talent and authenticity, so they love Nancy! How does she get it?
