The alternative news source I chose to use for this post as an example of alternative news for women is "Bust Magazine". Originally I found this magazine through a website called About-face.org which is an organization that is dedicated to educating young girls and women about the troubled message media puts on women and their bodies. They have their own workshops and curriculum in order to change the perspective of women that are unaware of the misleading mainstream media. Through their recommended website and magazines is where I came across Bust Magazine. Bust magazine is geared toward young women in providing news and culture from a female perspective. Or in their own words from the about section of their website: "BUST tells the truth about women's lives and presents a female perspective on pop culture. BUSTing stereotypes about women since 1993. " So not only does Bust magazine provide news, but an alternate perspective on popular culture as well. On their website they also have a blog as well with up to date posts of current stories and and videos.

  2. I read a New York Times article about the magazine. The magazine was founded in 1993 by Debbie Stroller, Laurie Henzel, and Marcelle Karp. Editor in chief, Debbie Stroller says that the magazine does use a beauty oriented approach not only because it allows for the magazine to be more mainstream but also to present the content (lip gloss, mascara etc) without the stereotypical views of Vogue or Cosmo.
