National Council of La Raza

National Council of La Raza (NCLR) is a great form of alternative media in the sense that it provides information and serves all Hispanic nationalities through their affiliates who provides services or information about health, education, housing, leadership and other areas. The way that they go about providing their services is through applied research, policy analysis and advocacy as well as supporting and strengthening community based organizations nationwide.

Another reason why I found this organization amazing is because when you go their website there is a section titled Latest News, in which they provide news and links from several different outlets both mainstream and not. The news featured under this section is  information about policies, laws, campaigns and etc that the organization is involved or that might also be of interest to the Hispanic community as well as their affiliates and funders.

A third reason as to why I find this particular organization relevant to our coursework is because the President and CEO of NCLR, Janet Murguia is a fellow Latina. She states that the reason she got involved in an organization such as this one is because she first handedly has “experienced the promise of the American Dream”. Therefore she has devoted her career to “opening the door to that dream to millions of American families”.  Murguia has been recognized for her work on several occasions, such as being selected twice as “100 Most Powerful Women in Washington”, featured on Newsweek in the issue of “Women and Leadership”, NonProfit Times has elected her as “Power and Influence Top 50 Leaders”, named “100 Most Influential Hispanic” by People en Espanol as well as Hispanic Business magazine just to name a few but many more publications has given tribute to her work in the Hispanic community as a leader and an influential Latina.
