Nancy De Los Santos

I never wondered how many female directors were out there as a matter of fact it never crossed my mind. As I went looking for female directors, I encountered a very short list (ten) of female hollywood directors. I was surprised, I was expecting to find at least 50 not ten! But what was more shocking to me was the fact that I could not find any hispanic female directors! I was appalled, where were my hispanic female role models?! I eventually started looking for hispanic screenwriters and found an incredible woman, Nancy De Los Santos.

Nancy De Los Santos was born and raised in Chicago, the daughter of Mexican American parents who moved to the big city from Texas. She has been nominated for the Emmy Award twice and she is co-writer and co-producer of The Bronze Screen: 100 Years of the Latino Image in Hollywood Cinema (Aceves). She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a with a degree in Radio, Television and Film. She later got her Masters in Communication from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Aceves).

In Real to Reel by Bell Hooks, she states movies “…provide a shared experience, a common starting point from which diverse audiences can dialogue about these charged issues” (2). Although I have not seen or read any of De Los Santos work, I can see from the brief descriptions of her work that most people can identify with her work. Her main goal is to show Latino's stories but she also wants to increase the number of minorities in the industry. She says in an interview, "For Latinos and Blacks, the number of available people in the business who look like we do is limited. Blacks and Latinos who are in a positon of power are in short supply" (Aceves).

  1. How exciting!!! A female Hispanic representative in the works of production!!! Movies don't get made out of thin air, scripts are such a vital part of making a movie- I'm so glad to see that her past works have included many things that incorporate females and Hispanic culture.

  2. It's crazy how little female directors are out there, and screenwriters. I never knew as well, but hearing about it, makes it so awful. There is so much talent out there literally wasting away because they aren't given the chance or opportunity to shine. That's amazing there is a female Hispanie who is recognizable as a screenwriter hopefully others would branch out as well.
