I remember when Katie Couric took over the CBS Evening News program; everyone was making huge deal out of it. Not only because she was going to be the first female evening news anchor, but because of the controversy that kicked Dan Rather out that led to her ultimate hiring. I listened/watch to a couple episodes (my job always had the news on), and didn't really think anything of it. In my opinion, it was the same show with a new host. But after those few episodes, I remember hearing the backlash already. Couric was receiving extreme criticism, and I couldn't really understand why. In fact, as we read, Couric didn't receive any adulation until her crippling interview of Sarah Palin. Nothing like taking down another powerful woman to assert your cultural importance. Anyways, she recently left the program, and she has since signed a contract with ABC to host a daytime talk show in the vein of Oprah. She'll be out of the journalism world, but she'll be making 40 million dollars, so I think she wins.

As far as alternative media for women goes, my friend suggested to me Jezebel.com. So I visited the site, and at first, I was a little underwhelmed by its content. It seemed to be just another women's entertainment blog. Then I got to reading and realized its makeup is much more feminist leaning than what I thought it was at face value. It's also pretty entertaining.

Jezebel was a princess!

Jezebel started in May, 2007 by Anna Holmes, Moe Tkacik, and Jennifer Gerson. It is an imprint of Gawker Media, the larger company behind sites such as Gawker, Gizmodo, and Deadspin. It's slogan is "Celebrity, Sex, Fashion. Without Airbrushing" which shows its value for displaying real femininity, and its distaste for mainstream media's handling of it. It's considered to be part of the "online estrogen revolution", which describes the influx of sites that tie together political awareness with the entertainment values of mainstream media.
