The media has been using women's beauty and physical features to make products and brands more marketable and interesting to the public. This use of the female form has been transferred onto the news media with the use of overly sexualized and beautiful women news anchors. The use of beautiful women in short skirts and low necklines is an attempt to get viewers attention and loyalty. Most of the news anchors who are women fit the mold of the archetypal young, beautiful, physically fit, light skinned female whose image the media tries to sell to us every single day. Since the appearance of woman news anchor weighs so heavily, the substance of the actual news she is reporting somehow seems to get lost. Suddenly all of the focus is on what she is wearing, how old or young she looks, or her weight. It is because of this that the female news anchor is not taken as seriously as male news anchors within our nation. Suddenly when a female makes it to the anchor position on a news show her achievements are attributed to to appearance and not her talent as a reporter.

I think its hard for people to take women seriously within the media because there is so much emphasis placed on how she looks. Minority women have the same issues, but as also largely absent from positions within the news media. When there IS a woman of color in an anchor position the focus is almost always on her appearance. The stories that are being reported in the news media are also usually directed towards and are for men. Regardless if the person reporting the news is a man or woman, the stories that are being featured are chosen by men. The small amount of stories that are directed towards women are still chosen by men and are therefore a projection of what women are "supposed" to care about, such as shoes, sales, make up, and cosmetic surgeries.

The resource that I have chosen is called Women News Network . This network is a not-for-profit media network that focuses on real issues that women are interested in internationally. All but one member of the staff is female, and the founder and editor is a woman. The stories featured are largely focused on women's issues and other human rights issues across the globe. I feel that this is an important news outlet because it encompasses issues around the world and these issues are reported from a women's point of view. The articles are important issues of substance that should be focused on more frequently within the larger media. I feel that this resource allows women to be taken seriously as reporters and journalists, which is something that is seriously lacking within our media.

  1. Women News Network is a great alternative media. It is essential to find and have a news source that presents stories of women around the globe. Mainstream media presents news that sell and are sensationalist, they rarely focus on stories of the real struggles women face worldwide.
