Love Yourself The Way That You Are

"The model stares provocatively at the viewer, her long blonder hair waving around her face, her bare chest partially covered by two curved bottles that give the illusion of breasts and cleavage" (Kilbourne).

Throughout most of my life, I have noticed how the media constantly dictates what defines beauty. The media consistently attempts to brainwash people into believing that something is better than it actually should be. Being a man, I can’t stand my women around me constantly either looking in the mirror or buying something just because the media advertised that they would “look” or “feel” beautiful.
Instead of constantly telling people, and more specific, women in general that they need to look a specific way or dress a certain way to appear beautiful, the media should take them how they are: big or small, tall or short. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone distinguishes beauty in his or her own way. It’s time to actually embrace the larger women instead of telling them to lose weight. When certain products are available for distribution, why does a commercial of a woman that has barely anything on, with absolutely no stretch marks or any type of deformity a constant representation of that product?
The constant lack of respect forces these women to buy the products from the same distributors that subliminally disrespect them. Instead of showing women that look like Barbie, show real everyday women that each other woman around the world can relate to. That would not only make a woman feel respected but also she will not have the need to constantly look at herself and think that there is something wrong with her. It’s fine to sell a product, but do the advertisers have to do it by setting a certain standard that is completely unreachable.
The advertisers need to understand that you do not need to lower someone down for them to buy your product. I think that a commercial with all kinds of women would demonstrate that the company is about being oneself. That way everyone would buy that product. Not just the women that feel ugly about themselves because the girl in the advertisement looks like a 20-year old blonde with a flat stomache and huge breasts.
People need to feel comfortable with themselves. They can't feel comfortable if something or someone constantly keeps telling them that they are ugly. We are all people and we all tend to be emotional when it comes to our appearance. I understand that advertisers need to sell their product but they really shouldn't be putting people down in the process. If the advertisers actually took a chance and put people that are just like everyone else in their commercials, everyone else would buy their product and still feel good about it; instead of buying it just to make themselves feel better or to look like one of the skinny models.

  1. I really wish everyone would think this way, but unfortunately due to society and culture- most people don't. It ticks me off, that even with those very very rare commercials that include REAL women of size and height- there are some people that have the audacity who go "ew, why would they put her in on tv?". -I've observed both men and women who reacted in this way, and it makes me realize that it's going to be very difficult to change advertisement/society in general. Even if you were to replace all the 20 year old, blonde bombshells with your next door neighbor's mom- it might take awhile for society to get accustomed to recognizing true beauty.
